"One individual cannot possibly make a difference, alone. It is individual efforts, collectively, that makes a noticeable difference – all the difference in the world!" – Jane Goodall

Project Background

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent closures, we have partnered with the Millbrae School District to create web-based SEL modules for young students. These modules take the form of live zoom lessons conducted by San Francisco State University students and cover SEL concepts and skills such as emotion knowledge, self management, perspective taking, and pro-social behavior. All SFSU student teachers are trained in SEL techniques and instruction. Instructors provide step-by-step guidance and offer questions and provide details that are targeted to enhance young students' understanding of social-emotional concepts.

As one of the prequalified contractors for First 5 San Francisco (2021-2023), the Global Classroom is excited to be a part of the early childhood quality improvement system through providing professional training, technical support, assessment, and educational resources to potential early education settings throughout San Francisco. We look forward to working with educators, care-providers, families and young learners on improving quality standards in early education and facilitating social-emotional and other educational resources in classroom settings. As contractors with First 5 San Francisco, it is our aim to serve all communities in achieving their desired educational goals.

Service-Learning in China

Project Background

Our project in China began 10 years ago when we were initially brought in as the international education research team collaborating with the Chinese government to better understand the impact of the One Child Policy (a mandate active between 1979 and 2015 to curb China’s growing population) on early social-emotional development. Our team identified the needs of ECE communities using baseline assessments with Chinese children, from which we began creating evidence-based SEL programs that could be delivered by local teachers. Over the years, our presence in the community has grown culminating in the Psychology International Service-Learning Program.

Beginning in March of 2020, the Global Classroom has partnered with the Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD) to create web-based SEL modules for young students. To this end, we have been working with the Social and Emotional Support Team at PAUSD comprised of school psychologists, counselors, librarians, and wellness trainers, assisting them in creating various SEL programs for their students. PAUSD is currently using our remote learning modules as a part of their Social-Emotional Enrichment Program for grades K through 2nd and will also be incorporating monthly family newsletters covering SEL practices at home.

Family Engagement in Mexico

Project Background

In this study we focus on the impact that both the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent closure has had on the daily lives of Mexican families. As of the 31st of October 2020 Mexico has reported over 1,070,000 positive cases and over 107,000 deaths (DGE). Many Mexican families are struggling to cope and manage the level of stress caused by the extensive quarantine (Garcia-Priego et al. 2020). Roughly, 400 parents will report both their own trauma-related symptoms as well as reporting behavioral changes in their child(ren) such as stress, aggressive behaviors, mood swings, and other difficulties from current life events.
